People say "what you don’t know won't hurt you". Siding specialists beg to differ. We can’t stress enough the importance of checking your siding throughout the year. Moisture has a way of creeping in unnoticed and hiding out in walls while an unsuspecting homeowner carries on with the busy schedule of the holiday season. Don’t let rotting siding be an unpleasant surprise for your family this year and take all necessary precautions to prevent this!
First, make sure to check your siding for rot at least annually. The more often you check the more likely you are to discover a problem early on. Which is very helpful since rot has a tendency to spread and that will leave you with a greater damage if discovered later on.
An obvious sign of rotting siding is cracked or loose siding. When moisture seeps through your exterior finish and starts rotting, the siding may become loose. If you discover dents or cracks you may need to probe at the layer underneath. It should NOT be soft.
If you have been noticing the paint inside your home is peeling or the wallpaper is loose, that is a good indication of faulty siding. Your exterior finish is meant to keep moisture out but if it is damaged it’ll allow water to seep through the wallboards.
This might seem a little strange but, keep track of your heating and cooling bills! Siding is supposed to maintain coolness and heat in a home. An abnormal heating or cooling bill may be an outcome of damaged siding.
Moisture is an potential problem with any kind of siding. Oftentimes the homeowner is unsuspecting of the hidden damage moisture can cause. It is good to be informed and aware of this risk. Don’t hesitate to go around your house with a flashlight inspecting your siding closely. You can run your hand on suspecting surfaces and probe with a screwdriver if needed. If you do find damage please make sure to contact your local siding specialist as soon as possible. If you are already aware of your rotting siding, feel free to fill out an estimate form and one of our specialists will contact you shortly. Our team at ES will gladly answer any more questions you might have. We are proud to provide over 30 years of combined professional building services!
